Making A Successful Podcast Step By Step [Guide 2019] (Part III)

In the previous post I spoke about:

  • What do you need to make a podcast?

2. What do you need to make a podcast?

Now I will give you some details of the tools that are not necessary, but it is important that you know to improve the quality of the audio and that will make your work a little easier.

For starters, if you have some extra budget, a pop filter is a good way to invest it.

It’s a mesh, like a kind of mosquito net that adapts to the microphone to avoid the sounds of the air, and small particles of saliva.

To add special effects I recommend you to download sound editing programs, not only will help you eliminate faults in the sound and reduce noise, but also have tools to distort the voice or add background sounds.

You can find many free editors on the web.

The next tool, you’ll need if you have an interview podcast, most people already have one, but it’s worth mentioning and it’s a Skype account.

This tool will allow you to make calls and video calls from your computer, making it the ideal platform if for example you create a podcast involving several people.

3. How to make a podcast: 7 simple steps

1. Identify the perfect listener for you

The first thing is to identify the people with whom you are going to share your message.

This step is necessary because it will give you a better idea of the people who will listen to you and you will feel much more comfortable as you speak.

The essential thing when you decide to make a Podcast is to imagine your audience and answer some questions like:

  • How old are the people who will listen to your podcast?
  • What tastes or hobbies do they have in common?
  • In which devices do you usually listen to your audios (telephone, computer, etc.)?
  • What other types of radio shows do they like?
  • When do they usually listen to podcasts?

Knowing who your listeners are will help you know what kind of language you’re going to use and what topics you’re going to talk about.

Recording an interview for school-age children is not the same as recording an interview for a group of DJ´s

So thinking about your listeners will be the first step and show you the direction of your path.

2. Define a theme for your recordings

You must identify what you like best and what you know best, may be in the field of computer science, painting, classes of some matter, in short, anything that you like to talk a lot about.

This way it will be much easier for you, at the moment of developing the script or the subjects of which you are going to speak.

You must find something that attracts the audience, that you master well and that you really like.

For example: you like cooking, you can choose a recipe for a dessert, there are many people looking for ideas for a dessert at the time of sharing with their loved ones.

Don’t worry about inventing something that has never been done before, there can be more than one podcast on the same subject, the important thing is that you give it a personal touch, is that nobody would do it as you do.

If you’re really passionate about the topic you’ve chosen, you’re going to have great ideas for getting people to connect with you.

When you’ve chosen something that interests you, make sure you’re always focused on the same topic, because that’s what the audience expects from you.

I recommend that you take a list of the topics you have developed in each show, so you won’t repeat them.

Also make another list with the new topics that come to mind, so you won’t forget it.

Don’t be afraid that at some point you won’t have anything to talk about, there will always be something new and I’ll leave you a trick to keep up your sleeve.

When you finish each show, ask your audience what they would like to hear next time.

They can leave their response on social networks like Instagram or in the comments section on your website, so you’ll gain more visitors and followers.

3. Choose a format for your podcast

All right, now you have to plan the format or structure of your Podcast. By this I don’t mean the type of audio like “MP3” or something similar; it’s rather the organization your project will have.

This task, you could say, has a lot to do with the number of members that will be part of your work. There are three types of formats, which you should know when you start your Podcast.

The first format is to do it individually, in this structure the Podcast is made by one person, it is simply a monologue.

In this way you will have control of your whole project, the preparations, the theme, the planning of the publication, the recording, and everything else.

The second format, the group format, is identified by having two or more people to plan the Podcast.

One point in favor of this format is that it will be much easier to have a more fluid conversation, but you will have to be careful because in this case you do not have full control of the Podcast.

A third format would be a combination of the previous two, for example an interview, since the Podcast is made up of more than two people and you can have control of the topic.
